For a new generation of UK racers and bashers who use steering wheel transmitters rather than sticks the DX3R represents the first opportunity to use a Pro-level radio that natively utilises Spektrum’s 2.4GHz DSM2 technology. Moving up from a basic RTR radio to DX3R, even with the original car, can see DSM2 improve responsiveness and reliability, but if you’ve moved on to a more advanced car or truck you’ll need a radio that can match the car’s performance to really advance.

 

 
 

Racers all over the world have been enjoying the advantages that Spektrum DSM has brought to help them win World class titles for some years now, so with input and help from some of the top of this group the engineers at Spektrum have produced the first of this new generation steering wheel radio: DX3R.

DSM2 technology is the underpinning of DX3R and with it you’ll get faster response time than any other radio system available, including the advanced PPM sets and even 2.4GHz module based systems. There’s no need to worry about crystals of course and no more interference, either peer or mechanically induced. DX3R takes care of frequency choice and 2.4Ghz is way above mechanical RF noise, and in a gas car with all that metal and carbon thrashing around that can be a real problem saver.

 
 
 

All the new technology is of course great, but you have to interact with the radio, possibly hold it for a good part of the day, so the ergonomics play a crucial roll too in becoming comfortable with the transmitter and optimising the performance that it, and you combined can obtain.

A lot of work has gone into the shape of DX3R, its balance, feel and its ability to interact with the driver. Sit it nose down when you’re in the pits; steering wheels are always so unstable and top-heavy when they sitting on the pit table. It’s comfortable to hold; the shape and materials for the grip owe their origins a lot to power tools. It’s light; because DSM2 needs less power than other radios to attain the range you need it doesn’t need so many batteries to power it. And if you want it’s left-handed; just a few minutes work can swing the controls around so that left-handed drivers can feel totally natural using it.

 
 Interaction extends beyond the tactile level for DX3R with its advanced software interface. An advanced array of pro-class features can be called on to fine tune a race car and wring out that last percent of performance, and all accessed by a simple rolling selector button. No need to remember a vast number of button and jog wheel combinations, to navigate just scroll through the menus using the roll button and then click with it to select the programming feature. It’s that easy, you roll to scroll, press to select, roll to adjust and press to store. The selection button is positioned so that it is easily reached and operated single handed while holding the transmitter and the LCD is angled for easy viewing.
That generously proportioned angled LCD screen also lets you clearly see all that’s going on while you’re programming DX3R. When moving into features like breaking and throttle curves this becomes acutely apparent when viewing data graphically as you can clearly view the changes you are making and assess how they will affect performance. 		 
 The DX3R has been paired up with the new SR3100 DSM2 3-channel race receiver. Weighing in at a miniscule 6 grams the SR3100 delivers all of the advantages of the superior speed and precision of DSM2 technology.
